This "corridor" completely separated East Prussia from the Reich, making trade and communication difficult or impossible. During Allied discussions on the peace treaty, Lloyd George, the English Prime Minister during the First World War, tapped this spot on the map and echoing the words of his secretary said "This is where (we have planned) the next world war will begin!"

More than 58,000 died at the hands of communists and Polish civilians. Hitler pleaded for the League of Nations dozens of times to protect them and alow danzigers to vote for their freedom. The world failed these people in 1939. Emboldened by the war Guarantee by England, Poland refused to budge or allow plebiscite. No one can tolerate continued murder of their kin. Had England and France not attacked Germany (which they did on 3rd September, 1939) there would have been no WW2. It was because of England the aggressor that so many died. He did not want war with Britain and France. He was very surprised when they both declared war on him due to German corridor.
Germany did not invade USA it was USA who declared war on Germany. attack on russia was more of pre-emtive strike than invasion.
Then why did Hitler take half of Poland in an arrangement with the USSR instead of simply taking back the Danzig corridor itself with its beleaguered German majority? This would have shown admirable restraint and left Hitler on the moral high ground. It would have made it more difficult for France and England to sell the idea of war to their respective populations.
